Menorca: On Menorca you can feel serenity. Menorca is the easternmost of the Balearic Islands and is 48 kilomtres long and almost 20 kilometres at the broadest point. Menorca is much quieter than the main tourist islands Majorca and Ibiza. Fine small harbours, bays and beaches are the main attractions on Menorca.

The capital of Menorca is Mahon (Believe it or not, but the city is the hometown of mayonnaise: Mahonesa = mayonesa = mayonnaise).

The port Cities Mahon and Ciutadela are the most popular places on Menorca. But the local life every day life on the island has still not been affected by the tourism.

Menorca was a British colony for many years in the 17:th century and this has left remains both in the local architecture and in habits. An amusing example is the usual and traditional local drink "Pomada", which is nothing else than what we call gin. The difference is that Menorca "pomada", that still is in production since several hundred years ago, is served with a few drops of fresh lemon and soda instead of tonic.

Unlike Mallorca and Ibiza the nightlife on Menorca is almost non-existent. The only thing really worth mentioning is the unique nightclub Cova d'en Xoroi. This is a fantastic disco in Natural caves, and with sea views. Take that!

Menorca invests in quality, not quantity: Mass Tourism like in Mallorca and Ibiza are not the models to follow on Menorca and new construction of tourist facilities are very limited, just as are golf courses. Today there is only one nine hole course on Menorca. It is unlikely that this will change in the next few years. This is because of very restricted water resources on Menorca.

Menorca is really a paradise for those who want to experience a different and more genuine Mediterranean culture than what usually is found on the classic Balearic Islands tourist resorts. Nature, culture, walking tracks and routes to explore on a bicycle, and if exercise is not the thing, renting a car.

Menorca's most traditional festival is celebrated in the end of June. Horses an important part of the festivities: The "Caballo Menorquin" is a local horse race. These horses are always black and similar to the Arabian horses that are common in Andalusia. In the celebration of the traditional ceremonies and events, only stallions are allowed to participate. (Ancient traditions are still an important part of the island's traditions).

Markets on Menorca

Like on the rest of the Balearic Islands and in the rest of Spain, the local markets are popular tourist attractions on Menorca.

On Fridays and Saturdays you will find a market in Born de Ciutadella and on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Explanada de Mao. On Saturday mornings in Ferreries where fruit, cheese, honey and other local products are sold. During the summer the night markets in the Ciudadella port, in Calasfons and Es Castell are very popular.
