Spain Holidays Lead Market in 2011 as Short Haul Booking Surge

According to market research company GfK Ascent, holidays to Spain are proving to be the most popular in 2011. The company indicates that 32% of the total market consists of bookings to this country. Travelmatch.co.ukechoed these findings as they have encountered a high volume of sales to Spain. The online holiday specialists found that the majority of these bookings were to warm, beach-side destinations.

Alex Francis of Travelmatch comments: “Spain is proving especially popular this year with tourists. These trends are partly cyclical, yet people also respond to the quality of attractions and good recommendations from others. The feedback we have received shows that British travelers in Spain truly enjoy their time in that country, and are always willing to recommend it to their friends and family. This is due to the warm weather and great amenities that are set up to receive tourists.”

GfK Ascent lists Greece and Cyprus as the second and third most popular destinations respectively. It also reported that short-haul holidays were up 10% this year.

According to Francis the popularity of nearby destinations such as Spain and Greece is unsurprising. He concludes: “The key figure here is the 10% growth of short-haul holidays: people are looking to save money yet still have a good time abroad, this has led them to focus on destinations that are nearby and provide a superb experience. Spain and Greece fit that bill perfectly with warm weather, beaches and great cultural attractions. In the future, we can expect continued growth in the popularity of European destinations as British people take advantage of the superb opportunities on their doorstep.”
