Indeed, one cannot fail to be impressed by the enviable setting of both golf courses, incorporating impressive views of the Marbella hills out to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. Dotted throughout the courses are marble bridges, classical statues and even authentic Roman columns, which give the courses interest at every hole. Everything on the two golf courses has been designed to make for a truly memorable game of golf each and every time, even down to the choice of Mediterranean trees chosen to mark each hole - from cypress, pine and olive to orange, jacaranda, chestnut and pomegranate.
Then of course, there are the peerless facilities at Hotel Villa Padierna, Marbella. Golfers can rejuvenate in the middle of a game with drinks and snacks from La Cantina del Golf’s beautiful terrace with panoramic views. When the game has finished, they can relax their muscles in the five star Thermae Spa, enjoy gourmet cuisine in one of the two excellent restaurants and discuss the day’s game over an aged whiskey by the open fire in Eddy’s Bar.

The pioneer of the course is the par-71 Flamingos Golf, offering generous and perfectly maintained greens for all levels of players. For the experienced golfer, Alferini Golf is without doubt the hotel’s star course. Stretching out between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and with magnificent views of the Mediterranean sea, this par-73 course, totals 7,000 meters of ample fairways making each shot an ideal challenge for a competition course. The expansive greens wrap around plentiful vegetation and the lake Flamingos, which takes its name from the yearly migration of flamingo birds from Africa.

Reminiscent of a Tuscan palace, it provides an incomparable selection of unique onsite experiences such as the two Flamingos golf courses, a 2,000 square metre SPA Thermae Spa and La Veranda restaurant headed by Víctor Taborda, who has been trained by several award wining chefs, including Martín Berasategui. Re-opened by The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company L.L.C. in March 2006, Hotel Villa Padierna has set a new standard for luxury hotels on Spain’s Costa del Sol.
Taking its name from the Count of Villa Padierna – one of Spain’s last great aristocrats, whose bronze statue greets guests as they enter – the hotel has a regal and elegant ambience similar to that of a grand estate. The hotel is surrounded by two 18 whole golf courses, Los Flamingos and Alferini and neighbours Marbella Old Town and Puerto Banus, overlooking the sea. With its own amphitheatre, ballroom, chapel, ESPA Spa designed after a traditional Roman bathhouse and unique and extensive collection of 18th and 19th century statues and artefacts, there is plenty to explore and discover.
Twenty metre tall glass atrium courtyard acts as the heart of the hotel where guests are invited to sit and relax, while having a drink or light snack. The courtyard unites each of the guestroom hallways to the main building and on each of the ground level hallways marble statues and Florentine frescoes decorate the public spaces.
Each of the eleven villas and 129 rooms, suites and villas are unique, with carefully chosen antique furnishings incorporating the new with the old. Plasma televisions, music systems and high speed internet access allow guests to enjoy the hotel as a home away from home. Additional amenities, such as Espresso coffee machines, private pools, sun decks and kitchens are also available in the elaborate villas. The majority of bathrooms also have floor to ceiling windows opening onto terraces.
The main building is Italian in style and has 57 rooms and suites. Linares is an extension of this building and houses an additional 55 rooms and suites, a grand ballroom and the SPA Thermae Spa. Linares takes its name from the Palacio de Linares in Madrid. Both Linares and the main Villa Padierna are entirely new constructions but are built to look as though a main villa existed. A new wing overlooking the Roman amphitheatre has recently been added hosting the luxurious "Casitas of Villa Padierna" with three two-bedroom suites and eleven one-and-two bedroom villas.
The outdoor garden is a replica of the Bag i Fin in Persia, a series of fountains and waterways made of glazed turquoise Islamic tiles, set amongst clusters of flora and fauna. Marble benches line smaller courtyard areas protected by lush foliage for quiet conversations and contemplation. Wonderful fragrances from Jasmine and Lady of the Night will lift the senses, while Cyprus trees and palm trees surrounding the lake-like swimming pool offer guests shade from the Mediterranean sun. A spectacular Amphitheatre and Chapel provide the perfect venue for weddings and cultural events throughout the year, designed to transform into an array of fountain that lights up with various florescent colours under the night sky.
La Veranda restaurant offers a very personal cuisine, using unique techniques; imaginative ideas and fresh seasonal ingredients. The executive Chef Víctor Taborda has been trained by several award wining chefs, including Martín Berasategui. His menu creates a gastronomic fusion of Northern and Southern Spanish cuisine, which puts Hotel Villa Padierna on the culinary map. Open to both hotel guests and local visitors, the restaurant can accommodate 65 diners and provides an informal and contemporary approach to cooking. Along with fine dining guests can experience the ten course tasting menu and experience dishes such as; "Ajo Blanco" soup with pine nuts, freshwater fish, seasonal mushrooms and herring caviar or roasted pigeon breast, wild wheat, Idiazabal cheese and cherries. Intricate alfresco paintings cover the walls to the entrance bar giving guests the sense of being outside and the outdoor terrace merges into the artwork with real vines and foliage.
La Loggia offers casual alfresco dining on the spacious terrace overlooking the main golf course, presenting regionally grown Spanish and international cuisine and informal drinks and snacks. On a clear day, guests will be entranced with views of Gibraltar and the coastline of Africa. La Pergola, for poolside dining, serves salads, sandwiches and healthy juices or refreshing cocktails.
Eddy’s Bar, named after Villa Padierna’s architect, interior landscape designer Ed Gilbert, is a cosy English inspired study with a fireplace elegantly decorated with valuable antiques and Spanish oil paintings. The ceiling is decorated with an arc shaped ‘lunettes’, reproductions of paintings depicting the original Medici Estate and closely resembles the architecture and landscape of the hotel. El Salon is adjacent to Eddy’s Bar and offers an indoor area for those who wish to smoke with a selection of fine cigars and aged whiskeys. The graceful sitting room contains antique gold gilded mirrors, two fireplaces and a range of antique furniture, clocks and oil paintings depicting the Roman emperors.
The 2,000 meter square ESPA Thermae Spa contains a vast range of treatment rooms including steam rooms, saunas, a cold water plunge pool, a relaxation pool and a large indoor swimming pool with massage jets. More unusual treatments include showers of oil, salt vapour treatments and an ice fountain.
Hotel Villa Padierna is located on Los Flamingos Golf Course – an 18 hole, par 71 world championship course with an additional course, Alferini par 73, opened in winter 2007. The idyllic setting overlooking the sea has a gentlemen’s handicap of 26 and a ladies’ handicap of 34, one of Costa del Sol’s finest.
