Skyscanner: Skyscanner Flight Trends February
Skyscanner reveals the most searched for flight destinations from the UK during February 2010.
The top seven remained unchanged from January 2010, with flights to New York remaining in position seven. Amsterdam moved up two places into 8th and Dublin moved up four places into 9th, likely due to more people booking cheap flights to Ireland for St Patrick’s Day.
Spain lost one of its top ten cities as Lanazarote slipped three places to 11th, but overall the country has the most destinations in the top 50, and remains the Brits’ most popular holiday spot.
February saw two new entries to the top 50 – the Polish city of Rzeszow which came in at number 45, and Manchester UK that entered at number 47.
Indian city Delhi saw the biggest rise in search popularity since January, climbing 12 places in the charts. Ironically, Athens also saw a significant rise in search traffic despite major unrest at the end of February which led to all flights to and from Greece being cancelled. Madrid, Glasgow and Luqa also moved up several places.
Flights to Las Vegas disappeared from the top 50 along with Johannesburg; despite world cup football fever gripping the globe, it’s likely that most people travelling to the South Africa World Cup have now already booked their flights.
Barry Smith, Skyscanner co-founder and development director commented:
Flights to Spain are still looking strong, although they have lost a little ground this month. Delhi was the biggest winner rising twelve places in the Skyscanner Top 50. The rise of Athens by nine places was a surprise result because rioting paralysed the country at the end of February and grounded all flights. Perhaps the old adage “no publicity is bad publicity” rings true here. Domestic destinations also faired well, with Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh all moving up the charts.”
