More than 30 years ago the small Spanish coastal town of Sitges, a little more than 30 kilometres south of Barcelona, was a very popular destination for Swedish tourists. But later Sitges became a quiet and exclusive resort for wealthy Spaniards. Later Sitges quite suddenly became Europe's paradise for gay and lesbian tourism.
Sitges is reached easily by bus from the airport in Barcelona, or 30 minutes by train from Barcelona City. Taxis from the airport Prat del Llobregat in Barcelona to Sitges costs around 60 euro. Sitges today is a charming mixture of Spanish fishing village and trendy elegant Beach Resort where many Spaniards are still looking for sun, sand and good food during the summer months.
In Sitges you find absolutely wonderful beaches and great exclusive shopping in an infinite number of small fancy boutiques.
In early October Sitges is also always in the because of the Sitges International Film Festival that mainly focuses on horror and terror movies.
From Sitges you can easily make many nice excursions to beautiful nearby regions and areas, in addition to the obvious visit to Barcelona.
Some places worth visiting that are not located more than a few hours from the beautiful beaches of Sitges are for example Girona, Valencia, La Rioja and Alicante.
Hire a car and travel around the areas around Sitges is certainly a good holiday plan if you have time for a little more than just sunbathing, swimming and nightlife in the rainbow colours! Visit the wineries in La Rioja, take a trip to Costa Blanca, and why not an excursion by boat to Ibiza where the night life in summer is among the absolute best in the world?
Gay tourism is part of everyday life in Sitges, if you can’t take it: Go somewhere else!
